OK so it's been a while and with good reason too, not only is the great firewall really annoying normally but we have had the V-Day celebrations recently and that meant lock down, seriously I did't see a 'Big Bang' for three weeks!
Talking of great walls...
We went to see a wall, it was pretty great, definitely a bucket list thing done.
We stayed in local farmer's place that has been converted to a fuck-all-frills type of place, like really bare, the mattress was maybe an inch thick.
And there was a sofa.
And we had to buy toilet roll from a local shop.
But actually it was kinda great, absolutely real, surrounded by locals, mostly playing cards, for hours and hours or whittling nick-nacks from braches and little else.
The owner made us some lovley food, spicey cucumber that was awesome, steamed bread the whole experience, the veg came from the central open area in the building, in which she grew all sorts.
She then drove us to the wall, although she had to cover up her number plate as she wasn't allowed to drive that day, they do have things in place to help with the smog, it's just that out in the sticks, no one really cares.
The part of the wall we went to had a purpose built village at the base of the mountain it was on, a very lovely affair, picture postcard stuff, but it was like Alton Towers for the East, you buy your tickets next to a massive Starbucks.
As usual I hated it, "Darling I'm all about the real experience!", right up until I wanted chicken wings and a glass of wine, then it was all ok with me.
If you are going to spend a day looking at a wall I would in fact recommend the tourist route, better food and drink, there is a cable car to take you up and down if you so desire, and I'd go the whole hog and stay in their boutique hotels and enjoy the view, honestly the experience we had may have been real but the mattress was almost imaginary.
